A Completely Innocent Lighter [Pattern]

I am back once more with a pattern I’ve been fine tuning for a couple weeks. I was recently informed by a friend that I am an auntie, and as a nod to our years of friendship and history, I’ve decided to provide my nephew with his very first lighter. I will not be expanding on that part of the story.

If you’d like a PDF download of the pattern, I have one available FOR FREE on Ko-fi – it also has additional pictures available.

Materials

I used Big Twist’s Posh for this pattern, with a 4.5mm/G+ hook.

  • Main Lighter Color
  • Small amount of yellow yarn
  • Small amount of orange yarn
  • Stitch markers
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Stuffing – I use poly-fil

Pattern notes

During the pattern, there will be multiple instances where you will sc 3 times in the same stitch, or sc3tog. This makes the corners of the lighter – I recommend placing a stitch marker in the center stitch of the final corner for alignment purposes, and continuing to move that marker as the rows continue. This will help mostly in the final assembly, when you are attaching the lid to the body. I’ve put an optional marker in the instructions for where you will be connecting the lid to the body.

sc – single crochet
sl st – slip stitch
st – stitch
sc3tog – pick up the next three stitches, yarn over, and draw through three loops on the hook. Then yarn over and draw through the final two loops on hook.
BLO – Back loop only
FLO – front loop only

A popular technique for plushie creation is to yarn under instead of over for single crochet stitches. When you insert your hook into the next stitch, bring your yarn under the hook instead of yarn over, and pull through the loop. Finish the stitch as normal. It will make a different texture than normal single crochet stitches using the yarn over process.

Do not cut the yarn – move onto LIGHTER ASSEMBLY

Lighter Assembly

At the end of row 9 of the lid, slip stitch in the next 3 stitches to position yourself in the middle of the corner. Turn so the lid is upside down, and place over the lighter in the closed position. Keep the round beginnings/ends on the same side.

Align the corner on the lid with the corner of the lighter body on round 14, where the ridge was formed. The lid will be on top, and upside down.

Going through the front loops only, put your crochet hook through the visible/front loop of the body from row 14, then through the front loop of the lid, and use a slip stitch to stitch them together.

Sl st through both layers 7 more times, going from corner to corner. FO and weave in ends.

Flame

The chain at the beginning of the round does not count as a stitch.

Yellow:
Row 1: Chain 11. Sc in 2nd ch from hook. Sc2tog, sc, inc in the next two stitches. Sc, sc2tog, sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Sc in first stitch. Sc2tog, sc, inc in the next two stitches. Sc, sc2tog, sc.
Switch to Orange:
Row 3-4: Repeat row 2.

FO and weave in ends.

Flame Assembly

Using the long tail from the body of the lighter, go through the back loops of the two stitches on the very end of the lighter.

Go through the back loop of the next stitch. Align the fire with the center of the lighter, then pass through the flame with the needle. Exit through the back loop of the opposite stitch.

Continue weaving the yarn through the back loops of the opening and the flame. When you reach the other end, go through the two back loops on the adjoining stitches, and weave in your ends to finish the assembly.

And done!
